Springfield, Ill—With the spring season often comes many outdoor projects with plantings. CWLP is reminding customers to stay clear from pad-mounted transformers, or the “big green box,” which is essential for electric service and reliability.
Blocking access to these transformers, like planting shrubs nearby, poses a safety hazard for utility crews, similar to obstructing fire hydrants. During power outages, CWLP crews will need quick access to unlock and open the cover of a transformer.
Obstructions, including landscaping and plantings within the clearance area, will be removed to gain access, which could cause delays to restoring power quickly during emergency repairs. Damage to an underground line or transformer equipment by planting near these, could cause severe injury, power outages for the neighborhood and result in costly repair fees.
