Springfield Police Department Warns Public About Fraudulent Donation Scams

The Springfield Police Department is warning the public after reports of fraudulent solicitation occurring in October at several west side retail areas. Multiple male suspects approached individuals claiming to collect donations for the Boys and Girls Club, requesting credit card payments. Once provided, the suspects charged amounts significantly higher than those agreed upon.

Investigators confirmed the suspects were not affiliated with the Boys and Girls Club in any way.

“With the holiday season approaching, we want the community to remain vigilant when approached by anyone requesting donations,” said Assistant Chief, Ryan Leach. “This applies not only in person but also over the phone and online. While most charitable organizations are legitimate, unfortunately, some may attempt to take advantage of generous individuals.”

The Springfield Police Department recommends the following precautions when approached for donations:

  • Verify with the business whether the organization is authorized to collect donations on-site.
  • Request identification, documentation, or name tags consistent with legitimate organizations.
  • Avoid untraceable payment methods, such as gift cards, wire transfers, or digital currency.
  • Be cautious of pressure tactics or a false sense of urgency to donate immediately.
Anyone who suspects fraudulent activity should contact the Springfield Police Department for assistance.
