The South Mahomet Road extension in Mahomet and Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Kurtis Duemler, P.E., CFM, were recognized Sept. 18 during the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Central Illinois Section (CIS) Annual Banquet in Springfield. The South Mahomet Road project, completed in 2024, won an Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award. The road was extended to address projected traffic congestion, providing Mahomet-Seymour Community Unit School District No. 3 improved access to its facilities and options for development. The project included a new Norfolk Southern Corp. railroad crossing and a new roundabout at the intersection of Churchill Road. The road was further extended to Prairieview Road during a second phase, with another roundabout built at Purnell Road. Hanson provided services for both project phases, preparing project development studies and design plans, specifications and estimates. Duemler, a water resources engineer at Hanson’s Springfield headquarters, was named the Young Civil Engineer of the Year. He was an intern at Hanson and became a full-time employee in 2019. He provides services for water resources projects, with a focus on hydrologic and hydraulic modeling. He previously served as president of CIS. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Calvin College and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, respectively, and is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois and a certified floodplain manager.
